TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team took an
early 1-0 lead over Hardin-Simmons
at the American Southwest Conference Men's Soccer Tournament in
Clinton, Miss., but was unable to respond to a late offensive surge by
the Cowboys, losing the match 2-1. The Cru moves to 10-6-1 overall and 8-3-1 in conference play while Hardin-Simmons improves
to 10-6-1 overall and 7-4-1 in ASC action.
Derek Geels put UMHB on the board first off an assist from Chris Torres
at the 66:55 mark. The Cowboys quickly responded when Zack Johnson
scored off a corner kick in the 68th minute. Dustin Beal
sealed the victory for Hardin-Simmons, again scoring
off a corner kick at the 73:30 mark. Both teams took 11 shots in the
match, with the Cru putting six of theirs on goal. Geels led the Cru
with three shots, while Torres and John Williams each added two. Brandon
Stegmeyer played the entire match in goal for
the Cru, recording two saves and allowing two goals.
Hardin-Simmons will advance to play No. 1 seed Mississippi College tomorrow at 11 a.m. No. 3 seed Texas-Tyler will kickoff against No. 6 seed Schreiner at 2 p.m. today, with the winner of that match advancing to face No. 2 seed Texas-Dallas tomorrow at 2 p.m. Winners of those matches will play in the tournament's championships match on Sunday at 1 p.m., with the champion earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III playoffs.
