Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team claimed
two of the three weekly American Southwest Conference Player of the Week
honors this week. Javicz Jones was recognized as ASC Defensive Player
of the Week and Chad Peevey was named ASC Special Teams Player of the
Week following the Cru's 54-20 win over East Texas Baptist University last Saturday.
Jones,
a senior linebacker from Katy Morton Ranch High School, posted 13
tackles and returned two interceptions for touchdowns for the Cru. He
became the all-time leading tackler in ASC history by pushing his total
to 416 and also became the first UMHB or ASC player to return two
interceptions for touchdowns in the same game. His 92-yard interception
return in the fourth quarter is the longest interception return in
school history. Jones also recorded a sack, a tackle for loss and a
forced fumble in the game.
Peevey, a junior kicker/punter from
Bryan St. Joseph's High School, hit two field goals and five extra
points for 11 total points. He also averaged 53.5 yards on two punts and
added a 57.9 yard average on kickoffs. His field goals came from 43 and
a season-long 48 yards. Peevey also added a six-yard run for a first
down on another punt attempt following a bad snap.
This is the
third conference player of the week honor for both players this season.
The Cru is 9-0 overall and 6-0 in ASC play on the year. The win over
ETBU clinched a postseason berth and at least a share of the conference
championship. UMHB will close out the 2012 regular season with a 1:00 PM
kickoff against Mississippi College (2-7, 1-5 ASC) at Tiger Field.
