Arlington, Texas – The Texas Rangers announced today
that the club has acquired left-handed pitcher Tommy Hottovy
(pronounced HAWT-uh-vee) from the Kansas City Royals for a player to be
named later and
cash considerations.
Hottovy, 31, was designated for assignment by the Royals on Friday, November 2.
He made 9 relief appearances for Kansas City in 2012, posting no record
with a 2.89 ERA (3 ER/9.1 IP). He spent the bulk of the
year at Triple-A Omaha, going 2-2 with 7 saves and a 2.52 ERA (14
ER/50.0 IP) over 41 relief outings. Opponents in the Pacific Coast
League hit .221 (42-190) with 16 walks and 61 strikeouts against
Hottovy, including just a .147 (11-75) figure by left-handed
batters. Hottovy averaged 11.0 strikeouts-per-9-innings with Omaha
this season, a career high for a full minor league campaign. He was
also named to PCL All-Star team at the break.
Hottovy has a career
4.05 ERA (6 ER/13.1 IP) in 17 relief outings in the major leagues with
Boston (2011) and Kansas City (2012). A Kansas City native, he pitched
four years at Wichita State before being selected
by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2004 First Year Player Draft.
With this move, the Rangers now have 35 players on the club's 40-man roster.
