Flagpole Dispute Ends in Veteran's Favor

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- An epic flagpole fight is over in one north Texas town and a group of angry veterans has come out on top.

In February a Rockwall County official had five feet cut off of the American flag pole at the Rockwall County Veterans Memorial.

That made it the same height as the Texas flag and Prisoner of War flag, which follows state code.

But veterans called the move criminal and disrespectful.

Veteran Tom Galli said, "This memorial is a very special thing and for someone who never served to come in and denigrate the memorial in the way it was done, I think it's a horrible thing."

As part of a recent settlement, the County Commissioner who ordered the flagpole cut will have to shell out more than $3,000 for a new one.

He'll also have to donate $2,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project.
