(KCEN) -- The Galaxy has overtaken Apple's iPhone as the best-selling smartphone.

Samsung's Galaxy S III has become the world's best-selling smartphone for the very first time.

According to Strategy Analytics, some 18 million units of the Galaxy S III were shipped in the third quarter of this year, compared to about 16 million of Apple's iPhone 4S.

The Galaxy S III is also one of the fastest-selling smartphones in the world, with Samsung recently saying it sold more than 30 million units since its launch in May.
