(KCEN) -- President Obama observed Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery this morning.
Mr Obama laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns and then paused in silence.
Following the wreath-laying, the president spoke at a remembrance ceremony at Memorial Amphitheater.
"On behalf of the American people I say to you that the memory of your loved ones carries on not just in your hearts but in ours as well and I assure you that their sacrifice will never be forgotten."
Veterans Day was previously known as armistice day to mark the cease fire that ended World War I.
In 1954, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. military personnel.
