(KCEN) -- The University of Texas celebrated the life of legendary football coach Darrell Royal yesterday.

Thousands turned out for the school's public memorial service on the Austin campus.

Royal coached the Longhorns from 1957 to 1976.

He led his teams to more than a dozen championships during that time.

Royal died last week. He was 88-years-old.
