(KCEN) -- This holiday many shoppers are looking for the best gift options for family and friends and gift cards seem to be the quickest and easiest option.
But some gift cards could carry high fees, making them far from a good deal.
The Better Business Bureau says you should do several things before buying a gift card.
Some of the steps you can take are to research before you buy, buy from a known and trusted source, avoid online auction sites, because cards sold there could be counterfeit or obtained fraudulently and read the fine print.
Also make sure you fully understand how the card works.
Inspect the card before buying, verify that protective stickers have not been removed and the pin number on the back of the card is not exposed.
You should also get a receipt with a gift card and give the recipient of the gift card the original receipt in case the card is lost.
