BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
--- Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel earned his ninth
Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honor on Monday after
another Heisman Trophy-worthy performance against the Missouri
Tigers last Saturday.
The nine SEC freshman weekly awards won by Manziel
are easily a record with the previous high being three set by five
different players. Manziel, from Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas,
led the Aggies to their 10th win of
the season with the 59-29 victory over the Tigers. The Aggies, ranked
No. 9 in the Bowl Championship Series standings, finished the regular
season with a 10-2 overall record, which was the program's first 10-win
season in more than a decade.
Manziel was also named one of eight Manning Award
"Stars of the Week" and fans can now go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl
Facebook page to vote for what they think is the best performance from
the past weekend. Other finalists were Derek Carr
of Fresno State, David Fales of San Jose State, Nick Florence of
Baylor, Landry Jones of Oklahoma, Robert Marve of Purdue and Bryn Renner
of North Carolina. Manziel received honorable mention National
Quarterback of the Week honors from the College Football
Performance Awards, and SEC Freshman of the Week honors from
SouthernPigskin.com.
Manziel passed for 372 yards and three touchdowns
and rushed for 67 yards and two scores as he generated 439 yards of
total offense and accounted for five scores before leaving the game
early in the fourth quarter. He connected on TD passes
to seniors Ryan Swope and Uzoma Nwachukwu and fellow freshman Mike
Evans. He scored on a one-yard TD run and an 18-yard scamper.
Early in the game, Manziel completed a 13-yard
swing pass to Ben Malena which broke the SEC total offense record of
4,327 set by Auburn's Cam Newton during his Heisman Trophy-winning
season in 2010. His two rushing touchdowns gave him 19
for the season, which matched one of the oldest school records in the
Texas A&M record book. Joel Hunt originally set the Aggies' season
touchdowns record of 19 in 1927, and it was matched in 1990 by Darren
Lewis and in 2006 by Jorvorskie Lane.
Manziel ranks in the top 35 in eight statistical categories in this week's official NCAA statistics, and leads the SEC in rushing (98.4 yards/G), passing (22.8 completions/G), total offense (383.3 yards/G), scoring (9.5 points/G) and points responsibility (21.5 points/G).
