(KCEN) -- In Mexico, authorities discovered the severely beaten body of former Mayor Maria Santo Gorrostieta Salazar after she was kidnapped earlier this month.
In early November she was driving her daughter to school when she was intercepted by two men in another car.
The 36-year-old was known for taking a hard line against drug gangs.
From 2008 to 2011 she led a city government in the state of Michocan.
During her time in office, she was frequently threatened by criminal gangs and survived two previous attempts to take her life.
She was also a strong supporter of women's rights in Mexico.
