Algae Causes Water at Australian Beach to Turn Red

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Over in Australia, one famous beach resembles tomato soup today.

Clovelly Beach in Sydney closed because giant floating swarms of red algae appeared off the coast of the beach.

The beach remains closed today.

Local media reported the algae is a type that could cause skin irritation in some people.

The algae was probably caused by cooler, nutrient water coming to the surface.
