Five Killed, Eighteen Wounded in Afghan Attack

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Nine suicide bombers struck an American airfield in Afghanistan early today, killing five people and wounding 18.

Two civilians and three members of Afghanistan's Special Forces were killed in the attack.

The lone attacker detonated a car bomb to help other attackers get inside the base.

Afghan security officials killed the suicide attackers who had not detonated their devices.

ISAF spokesman Brig. Gen. Gunter Kats says, "Initially what we found out was that there most likely three suicide attackers using vehicles to attack the base. The pyramid of the base has not been breached so nobody was actually able to get inside the base. We got some ISAF troops who were wounded and, according to our reporting, one member of the Afghan National Security Forces has been killed during the attack."

It's important to note none of the insurgents actually got on base in Jalalabad.
