Capitol Christmas Tree Lit

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Last night in our nation's capitol, peace and goodwill replaced politics, at least for a little while.

House Speaker John Boehner flipped the switch on the Capitol Christmas tree, with help from 17-year-old Ryan Shuster, an Eagle Scout from Colorado.

The tree comes from the White River National Forest near Meeker, Colorado.

Boehner took a moment before the lighting to speak of the spirit of the holiday.

He said, "And in turn this tree will bring light to us, opening our hearts a little more to the needs of our neighbors and the covenants that we've made with one another."

Children from across the state created thousands of ornaments to decorate the 73-foot-high engleman spruce.
