(KCEN) -- A treaty meant to benefit disabled people around the world was defeated in the Senate.
Former Republican Senator and Presidential candidate Bob Dole was present in a wheelchair as voting took place.
He appeared on the Senate floor just days after being hospitalized.
The Rights for Persons With Disabilities Measure aimed to transform how nations across the world treat those with long-term mental, physical and intellectual impairments.
The measure fell short of the two-thirds majority needed, 61-to-38.
