Yesterday Pope Benedict sent his first ever tweet, launching a new, more personalized evangelism campaign.

The pontiff will tweet in eight languages from his own personal handle @pontifex.

Pope Benedict sent the first tweet from his account at the end of his weekly general audience.

He said in Italian, "Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart."

More than a million people have responded to Pope Benedict's "follow me" invite.
