WACO, Texas — Baylor has added four student-athletes to its football program that will enroll
for the spring 2013 semester, head coach Art Briles announced Wednesday.
Two
junior college transfers, offensive lineman Tyler Edwards of Blinn
College and tight end Gus Penning of Riverside City College, have signed
National Letters of Intent and
prep quarterback Chris Johnson, who will graduate early from Bryan
(Texas) High School in December, has signed a financial aid contract and
will enroll at Baylor for the spring semester.
Edwards
played two seasons on the offensive line at Blinn College in Brenham,
Texas. The 6-foot-4, 285-pound lineman spent a redshirt season at
Arkansas Tech in 2010 before
transferring to Blinn. Edwards was an all-district and all-region
lineman at Glen Rose High School in Malvern, Ark.
Penning
comes to Baylor after playing the 2012 season at Riverside City College
in Riverside, Calif. He caught 31 passes for 425 yards and three
touchdowns and is rated the
No. 25 recruit on the ESPN Junior College 100 listing (third among
tight ends). The 6-foot-5, 245-pound tight end spent the 2011 season as a
redshirt at Grand Rapids Community College near his hometown in
Michigan, but transferred when the school dropped its
football program. He was a two-year varsity letterman as a linebacker
and tight end at Jenison High School in Jenison, Mich.
Johnson is a 6-foot-4, 195-pound athletic quarterback from Bryan High School in Bryan, Texas, who ranks 166th
on the ESPN300 national recruit listing. He is rated
the No. 3 dual-threat QB nationally by ESPN, No. 16 by 247sports.com
and No. 24 by Rivals.com. Johnson split time at quarterback as a junior
in 2011 when he threw for 473 yards and ran for 431 and accounted for 13
combined TDs. He played receiver and safety
as a sophomore in 2010.
Baylor has also received a signed financial aid contract from a member of its 2012 signing class, wide receiver Kiante' Griffin of Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas, who will enroll for the spring semester.
Baylor concludes the 2012 season by facing No. 17 UCLA in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27 at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium. The Bears will be playing in bowl game in
a third straight season for the first time in program history. Fans can purchase tickets and find bowl information at www.BaylorBears.com/bowlcentral.
