(KCEN) -- In Guatemala, indigenous Mayans hope today's end of the Mayan calendar will bring in a new era of prosperity and recognition for the community.
Mayan descendants gathered in Guatemala City for a traditional ritual to welcome the end of the calendar and a start of another.
For many Mayans, today is reason for hope for the future.
Many of the indigenous Mayan population lives in poverty.
And the UN estimates more than half of the youth do not complete school.
