(KCEN) -- Three New Jersey Police officers were shot this morning after a suspect grabbed a gun and open fired inside a police station.

The incident happened around 5:30 A.M. and ended when the suspect was shot and killed by an officer.

Rosemary Connors has more on what led to the shooting.

Neighbor Sharon Lehner says, "Right away, I knew something was very wrong."

Guarded by crime tape the Gloucester Township Police Station is now the scene of an investigation after a shoot out inside.

According to the deputy chief, police were processing a suspect involved in a domestic violence incident when a struggle ensued around 5:30 this morning.

The suspect managed to obtain a gun and shoot three officers sending all of them to the hospital.

Deputy Chief David Harkins says, "The officers returned fire and the suspect is deceased at this time in the police station."

"Slowly you saw police officers arriving in their cars from home. You know they had their badges on and you could see their guns. They locked down the police station and then the crime scene lab came," says Lehner.

Early this morning neighbors woke up to the sounds of emergency crews and investigators descending on police headquarters.

According to Lehner, "I kind of thought right away that maybe a police officer had been shot because of all the police that had arrived here from outside of this township."

The motive for the shooting is still unclear.
