(KCEN) -- Applications for unemployment benefits shot up by 4,000 people last week.
So the four-week average increased to over 300,000.
Weekly applications for unemployment benefits reflect layoffs.
Overall they have remained between 360,000 and 390,000 over the past 12 months.
That means the jobs market is still losing ground.
During that time, an average of only 53,000 jobs were added each month.
