U.S. Marine Honors Promise Made to Fallen Comrade

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Its a story of friendship, service, and a promise kept.

Several years ago Marine Sergeant John Diehm promised to reenlist with Corporal Jared Verbeek.

But in 2011 Verbeek was killed in action fighting in Afghanistan.

In order to keep his promise, Sergeant Diehm reenlisted in a special ceremony at the Visalia Public Cemetery next to the grave of Corporal Verbeek.

"I chose to bring it to him because he was more than a brother, more than a Marine to me," says Diehm.

Last summer an overpass along California's Highway 198 was named for Corporal Jared Verbeek.
