(KCEN) -- It's an old tradition, but gun shows in Austin could soon cease to exist.
County Commissioners are considering a proposal to cancel a contract for gun shows at the Travis County Expo Center.
That led Attorney General Greg Abbott to send this twitter message, "If Austin or Travis County try to ban gun shows, they better be ready for a double-barreled lawsuit."
Yesterday he publicly stood by his statement.
Abbott said, "I call into question whether or not the city of Austin should be reaching out to the state of Texas asking the state of Texas to give it taxpayer money from the major event trust fund for hosting certain events in Austin, while at the same time, pushing away events like these gun shows."
He said that the federal courts have already ruled that state law trumps the gun show restrictions that Austin and Travis County are considering.
