(KCEN) -- So far one American Texas native Frederick Buttaccio has been confirmed dead after an Islamist attack in Algeria.
The Algerian Government reports 32 Islamic militants and 23 hostages were killed during a mission to end a hostage crisis at a gas plant.
Algeria's news agency reported special forces stormed the gas plant in a final effort to free those hostages.
The operation began three days ago.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta had strong words for the kidnappers.
"We've made very clear that nobody is going to attack the United States of America and get away with it. For that reason we have made a commitment that we are going to go after al
Qaeda wherever they are and wherever they try to hide," says Panetta.
Communications Director Mike Rosen says an Austin man is one of the lucky survivors.
