(KCEN) -- One of the 23 hostages killed in Algeria was from the Houston area.
Fifty-eight-year-old Frederick Buttaccio of Katy was a BP employee and died during the Algerian mission to free hostages abducted by Islamic militants.
Today people from his home town spoke about the tragedy.
Tamika Phillips a Houston resident says, "Just being here and knowing that it was a family close by, it really just touches home."
"My heart definitely goes out to them and you know wishes that they can make it through this" says resident Dianne Moore.
Austin resident Mark Cobb was also taken hostage but was able to escape without injury.
