(KCEN) -- French sailor Alain Delord arrived in Australia today after he was rescued by a cruise ship in the remote waters of the Southern Ocean.
The 63-year-old began his journey in October, but had to abandon his yacht after it lost its mast and rough weather damaged the hull.
He floated in a life raft for three days.
He was about 500 nautical miles from land, too far for a helicopter rescue. But the Orion, a cruise ship, was returning from Antarctica when it responded to a call for help.
It took the ship three days to reach Delord, who survived thanks to an air drop of food, water and communications equipment.
