(KCEN) -- There is good news about education today.
The graduation rate for high school students is at the highest level it's been in nearly four decades.
The report out today by the U.S. Education Department looked at graduation and dropout rates for the 2009-2010 school year.
It shows graduation rates increased by more than a percentage point in 38 states.
The national dropout rate was down three percent overall from the previous school year.
The report also shows that many students stayed in high school another year if their course work wasn't completed in four years.
