(KCEN) -- We may be enjoying mild temperatures here, but many states are dealing with the coldest temps they have seen in several years, some places are even hitting below zero.

In Chicago, firefighters scrambled to save a dog that was stranded on the ice.

It's so cold a cross country ski event was canceled because of the extreme conditions.

And it doesn't look like the cold will let up anytime soon.

Forecasters are even reporting that some areas will suffer through the longest extended cold streak they have seen in the last two years.
