(KCEN) -- A bill promoting a new assault weapons ban was unveiled today in Washington DC.
Senator Dianne Feinstein of Cali. led the push.
Feinstein says her goal is to convince opponents that the weapons are not needed by average Americans.
But conservative Democrats have also opposed the measure.
It's the first such bill to be proposed since the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary.
McCarthy said, "I am telling you between this battle, between now and when we get this passed you're going to hear from the NRA and an awful lot of them saying that's not going to do anything. I'm saying to you we can save lives."
Republicans in both the House and Senate are expected to strongly oppose the ban.
