FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –
Highlighted
by Everett Walker's win in the 200-meters, Baylor posted nine scoring
performances in 15 event finals to open the Razorback Invitational at
the Randal Tyson Track Center
on Friday.
"Overall,
it was a good first day," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We had a lot
of good things happen with a lot of people qualifying and hopefully we
can continue it on to
tomorrow."
Walker
recorded the fourth-best time in the NCAA this season and the 10th-best
time in program history as he finished the one-lap race in 20.81. His
time was a personal-best,
eclipsing his previous mark of 21.08 set at last season's Big 12
Championships.
Blake Heriot also tallied a strong performance in the 200-meters as he was fifth in 21.21.
"The
highlight of the day would have to be Everett's 200," Harbour said.
"That is a really, really good time this early in the season. He
executed really well. Blake Heriot
also had a really good 200."
In
the 5,000-meter run, Baylor had three scoring men's runners. Brad Miles
was six-hundredths of a second from setting a new personal-best, but
still finished third in 14:46.73.
Brandon Reed (14:50.61) was 5th and Blake Niccum (15:00.63) was 8th.
Niccum's time obliterated his previous personal record of 15:35.80.
The BU men also had a solid day in the field events.
Freshman
Felix Obi took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 23-10.25, while
fellow freshman Allex Austin was seventh in the high jump with a mark of
6-10.75.
On
the women's side, Skylar White followed up her win in the shot put at
the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational with a fifth-place showing by
throwing 54-2.0.
In
the women's pentathlon, Jessica Shadley led a group of three BU
athletes by scoring a personal-best 3,332 points for an eighth-place
finish. The junior also posted personal
records in the 60-meter hurdles (9.23) and the 800-meter run (2:30.10).
In
the 60-meter hurdle qualifying, Tiffani McReynolds continued to impress
as she had the top time on the night with a season-best tying time of
8.22. BU's Taije Jordan (8.68)
and Christina Holland with a personal-best tying time of 8.51 also
qualified for the semifinals. On the men's side, Bryce Grace was 10th in
8.19 to qualify for the semifinal round.
Baylor had qualifiers on both the men's and women's side for Saturday's
semifinals of the 60-meters. In her first run in the event this spring,
McReynolds turned in a 7.47,
which was the fourth-best time in the preliminary round. Walker
continued his strong start to the season in the event as he posted a
personal-best tying time of 6.70. That mark was second-best on the
evening. Alex Reece also qualified with a time of 6.97 to
make the 16-person semifinals.
Through
four events of the men's heptathlon, Baylor's Hunter Brook sits in
sixth place with 2934 points. The junior set new personal bests in each
event contested on day one.
He clocked a time of 7.48 in the 60-meter hurdles, while registering
leaps of 21-2.25 in the long jump and 6-8.25 in the high jump. In the
shot put event, Brook tallied a throw of 43-8.5. The high jump was the
third-best in the competition and the shot put
throw was fourth.
Currently, Baylor is fourth in the men's standings with 30 points, while the women are 10th with five points.
On Saturday, field events will resume at 11 a.m. with running events beginning at noon.
