(KCEN) -- The increase in childhood obesity has contributed to a rise in type two diabetes among kids.

For the first time The American Academy of Pediatrics has developed a set of guidelines to treat the disease in this young population.

Experts say children who have such low blood sugar that it can't be determined whether they have type one or type two diabetes should be put on insulin therapy right away.

Everyone else should be treated with the diabetes drug metformin and speak with experts about changes they can make to their diet and exercise routine.
