IRVING, Texas –
Baylor
men's basketball senior point guard Pierre Jackson was named Phillips
66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday. Jackson picked
up his first Player of the Week award and fourth career
Big 12 weekly honor for games played Jan. 21-27.
Jackson was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week three times during his debut season in Waco last year. He joins Cory Jefferson (Nov. 12) to give the Bears multiple Big 12 Player of the Week honorees
in the same season for the fifth time, and four of those occurrences were in the last five seasons.
The
Bears have now earned 12 Big 12 Player of the Week honors in the last
six seasons after earning seven such honors in the league's first 11
years. Jackson is the seventh player in program
history to win Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Week honors during his
career, joining Terry Black, Lawrence Roberts, Curtis Jerrells,
LaceDarius Dunn, Ekpe Udoh and Perry Jones III.
Jackson
has led the Bears to a 5-1 record in Big 12 play, tying its best
six-game start in the conference's 17-year history. He averaged 19.0
points and 4.0 assists in leading the Bears to
wins at home against Oklahoma State and on the road at TCU during the
week.
A
Las Vegas, Nev., native, Jackson hit 8-of-16 three-point attempts
during the week and led Baylor in scoring in both games. He posted 18
points and three assists in the Bears' win over Oklahoma
State on ESPN Big Monday, and he followed that performance with 20 points and five assists in only 27 minutes of play on Saturday at TCU.
Jackson
extended his streak of consecutive games scoring in double figures to
27 straight, which is 10 games longer than the Big 12's next longest
active streak, and he's hit at least one three-point
field goal in 30 consecutive games, giving him the second-longest
streak in Baylor history.
He
leads the Big 12 in scoring (18.7) and ranks second in the league with
5.9 assists per game. Jackson also ranks third in the conference in
three-point field goals made per game (2.4), fourth
in steals per game (1.7), fourth in minutes per game (33.4), fifth in
assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7), sixth in free throw percentage (80.0)
and seventh in three-point field goal percentage (37.3).
Baylor returns to action when it hosts Oklahoma on ESPNU at 6 p.m. CT Wednesday at the Ferrell Center. The Bears will be looking for six wins in their first seven conference games for the first time since starting 6-1 in Southwest Conference play in 1968-69.
