Liberty Head Nickel Expected to Be Auctioned for $2 Million

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A nickel can't buy you much by itself these days.

But a 1913 liberty head nickel is expected to auction off for much more than the five cents it is worth.

Experts expect bidding to exceed 2 million dollars.

The coin was minted one century ago in 1913 and is one of only five known to exist.

But it is the coin's back story that makes it even more interesting and valuable.

In 1912, a man who worked at the Philadelphia mint produced the five coins putting 1913 on its face as the year.

But 1912 was officially the last year that coin was issued.

And in 1913 it was replaced with the buffalo head nickel.
