(KCEN) -- Today it was President Obama's turn to lay out his immigration goals.
This, after a bi-partisan push in Congress to deal with the 11 million illegal immigrants already living in the U.S.
Under the Obama plan, illegal or undocumented immigrants would have to register with the federal government, pay fines and back taxes and undergo background checks.
But not before increased border security can be put into place.
And illegal immigrants would receive green cards only after every lawful applicant has gone through the process.
Obama said, "If Congress is unable to move forward in a timely fashion, I will send up a bill based on my proposal and insist that they vote on it right away."
Experts say the bi-partisan immigration plan drafted in the Senate is more likely to get support in the Republican-controlled House.
