WACO, Texas –
For
the first time this season, members of the Baylor track and field team
will be competing in two separate meets on the same weekend this Friday and Saturday.
One
group of Bears will travel to the 38th-annual Frank Sevigne Husker
Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., and a smaller group will take part in
Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational in
South Bend, Ind.
"We
are still very early in our season and we hope to continue to see some
improvement this weekend," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We are making
progress, but we just have
to have that trend continue."
Individually,
Baylor has eight event marks that are among the top-20 in the country
with six of those being in the top-10. As a team, the Baylor women are
listed at No. 18
in the latest USTFCCCA Indoor Track & Field Rankings, while the BU
men moved up 37 places to No. 36 this week.
Tiffani
McReynolds has won the 60-meter hurdle title at both the Texas A&M
12-Team Invitational and the Razorback Invitational this spring. Her
winning time of 8.10 in Arkansas
is the second-ranked mark in the country. For her efforts at the
Razorback event, McReynolds was named the Big 12 Female Athlete of the
Week on Tuesday.
Felix Obi, fresh off setting the school record in the triple jump last weekend, owns the nation's fourth best mark (52-4.5).
Everett
Walker holds the fourth-best time in the 200-meters, after winning the
event at the Razorback Invitational in 20.81. He also has the
20th-fastest time in the NCAA in
the 60-meter dash by twice running a 6.70.
Blake
Heriot set a personal-best at the Razorback Invitational and is tied
for 16th in the country with a time of 47.25 in the 400-meters. Heriot
is the leadoff leg for BU's
ninth-ranked 4X400-meter relay team, which also includes Isaiah Duke,
Richard Gary and Drew Seale. The group's best time this year was 3:10.48
at the Razorback Invitational.
BU's
women throwers are among the best in the country. Skylar White
(55-0.75) is ranked tied for 10th in the shot put, while Erin Atkinson
is ninth (67-4.75) in the weight
throw.
At
Nebraska, Baylor will face 24 other Division I teams during the two-day
meet at the Devaney Center, including 2012 men's NCAA indoor and
outdoor champion Florida. The Gators
are currently ranked second on the men's side with their women ranked
seventh. Other ranked teams at the meet include Auburn (9th/24th), the
ninth-ranked University of Central Florida women, the 14th-ranked
Wisconsin men, the 18th-ranked Kansas State men and
the 21st-ranked Oklahoma State men.
The men's and women's combined events will start the action on Friday at 11:30 a.m., while the men's weight throw will be the first field event at 5 p.m. and the first running
event will be at 6 p.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdle prelims. The heptathletes will be first again on Saturday at 10 a.m., while both the field and running events will start at Noon.
At Notre Dame, a select group of runners will represent Baylor. The meet is set to start at 4 p.m. on Friday and resume again on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame's
Loftus Center.
"By
going to Notre Dame we are just trying to get as many of our athletes
qualified for nationals as we can," Harbour said. "Notre Dame is one of
the meets where people go
to run their distance medley relay team, so we will have some great
competition there."
Last
weekend, at the Razorback Invitational, the Baylor men finished tied
for sixth with 56 points and with 30 points the BU women tied for ninth.
McReynolds (60 hurdles) and
Walker (200-meters) won BU's two-event titles.
Following this weekend's meets, Baylor will return to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 9.
