Wing Demand Highest During Super Bowl Sunday

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- It's one of the biggest sports day of the year but the Niners and the Ravens aren't the only ones under pressure on this Super Bowl Sunday.

For bars, pizza joints and any place that sells wings today is their Super Bowl.

Restaurants and bars were packed today!

During Super Bowl weekend, Americans are expected to eat 1.23 billion wings.

To put that in prospective if you laid down each wing, it would stretch from San Francisco to Baltimore, 27 times.

At just over $2 a pound, the wing is the most expensive part of the chicken and at high demand.

It's up 14 cents from last year.

At Wings, Pizza and Things in Temple, they sold 10,000 last year.

This year, they're expecting to sauce and toss 13,000 wings.

Since they opened 6 years ago the price of wings has tripled.

And buying wings in bulk is the way to go for the big game.

Wings, Pizza and Things has 50 wings for $37.

Wings, Pizza and Things Food Supplier Sarah Dent says, "Everybody wants 'em, it's a perfect Super Bowl food. And the demand is high because of the drought. Less chickens."

"It's our Super Bowl too. It's a mandatory work day for every employee. It's our number one sales day of the year," says Mike Dent of 'Wings'.

If you haven't had your wings yet there are plenty to spare, the shortage doesn't effect us here in Central Texas.
