Florida Buy Back Program Collects Hundreds of Weapons

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Hundreds of people turned in weapons during a gun buy back program in Tampa and some of the weapons were really unexpected.

There was a flute that fires and someone even turned in a rocket launcher to deputies.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's office set up five locations Saturday, where people could unload their unwanted weapons.

But they weren't expecting hundreds of people to show up at each location.

Capt Chad Chroniste of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, "We knew in light of the recent tragedy in Newtown that it would be popular. We never even imagined that it would be as overwhelmingly successful as it was."

Deputies have already determined eleven of the guns turned in were previously reported stolen.

In exchange for each gun handed over, deputies gave out $75 and free tickets to a rays or lightning game.
