(KCEN) -- The little boy who was held hostage for a week in an underground bunker celebrated his 6 birthday today.

People gathered in Dale County, Ala. to celebrate the big day and his safe return.

A young woman organized the event a few days back, initially as a prayer vigil.

But with news of 6-year-old Ethan's rescue and safe return on Monday, plans changed.

More than a thousand birthday cards from all across the country and around the world have been collected for Ethan.

His captor was shot and killed when federal agents rushed in to save the boy.
