
The McLennan Highlanders defeated the Weatherford Coyotes 82-71 tonight at The Highlands.
The two teams kept it close in the first half with neither team gaining more than a six-point lead. MCC led 38-35 at halftime.
The
Highlanders opened the second half on an 11-2 run and extended the lead
to 14 with 16:03 remaining in the game. Weatherford rallied, cutting
the lead to four midway through the half. MCC held the 76-71 lead with
2:36 to play. The Highlanders went 6-6 from the free throw line in the
final minute and a half to seal the win.
D.J. Weathers led the Highlanders with 18 points. Tevin Hanner and Deondre Ray added 17 and 12, respectively.
In women's action, the Highlassies fell to the Lady Coyotes 80-65.
The
game was close through the first seven minutes of play. Weatherford led
17-15 with 12:51 remaining in the first half. The Lady Coyotes broke
the game open with a 13-1 run and held the 42-31 advantage at the
break.
Weatherford continued to pull away in the second half,
extending the lead to 23 with 8:45 remaining in the game. MCC fought
back, cutting the lead to 13 several times late in the game but was
unable to pull any closer.
Dominique Taylor led the Highlassies with 16 points. Shanice Davis and Latifah Rainey scored 11 and 10, respectively.
MCC returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Temple. The women will tip off at 2 p.m., followed by the men at 4 p.m.
