(KCEN) -- A nine-year-old girl in Mexico has given birth to a baby boy.

Hospital authorities in the state of Jalisco confirmed the girl gave birth to a baby boy less than two weeks ago.

The boy weighed five-and-a-half pounds.

Doctors say both the mother and child are in good health and both are in the care of the girl's grandmother, but hospital staff say because of her age, the girl will need to have extensive follow-up visits.

The baby's father is a 17-year-old and the state's Attorney General's office is investigating whether the case should be legally considered child sex abuse or rape.
