(KCEN) -- A Kentucky National Guard soldier is now a Silver Star Recipient. Today Captain Shannon Ison received the nation's third highest honor for his strength and heroism.
Ison reflected on what happened five years ago.
He saved his platoon from gunfire and a detonated roadside bomb in Afghanistan that injured four soldiers.
"A vehicle got in front of us and it hit an I.E.D. Then it initiated an ambush which we ended up having to fight that as well as trying to help those individuals that were in the vehicle, " Ison said.
The danger lasted for seven days and his team was attacked 19 times.
Ison will return for another deployment next year.
