Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could
not overcome a seven-run seventh inning as the Cru fell to Texas
Wesleyan 11-6 in the 2013 season opener Monday evening in Belton. The Rams improve to 6-3 on the year with the win while UMHB moves to 0-1 on the season.
The
Cru took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Chris Florack's RBI
double and Seth Mogavero's RBI groundout. Texas Wesleyan tied the game
with two in the top of the fourth. Zack Whiddon's two-run triple put
UMHB up 4-2 in the bottom of that frame. The Rams cut it to 4-3 with an
unearned run in the top of the sixth before exploding in the seventh.
TWU took advantage of three errors, four wild pitches and two walks to
put together the seven-run rally. The Rams added a run in the ninth to
make it 11-4 before Florack singled home a run and Chase Burrow scored
on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to cut it to the final
margin.
Whiddon and Drake Shukanes had two hits apiece to
lead the Cru. Nick Bergmann took the loss after giving up four unearned
runs in the seventh. UMHB used seven pitchers in the game. Jacob Lyons
picked up the win after scattering two unearned runs and four hits over
three innings. Henry Yates was 3-3 at the plate for the Rams.
The Cru will return to action with a 6:00 PM single game against Hendrix College on Friday. That game will open a three-game weekend series between the two teams.
