(KCEN) -- A five-day manhunt for an escaped prisoner in Texas ended early this morning when he was shot and killed.
Officers discovered Alberto Morales hiding in a wooded area near Grapevine.
Morales escaped Monday after he stabbed a Miami detective with part of his eyeglasses.
Police found Morales a few miles from the parking lot where he escaped and surrounded him.
According to SGT Robert Eberling of Grapevine PD, "And when the officers told him to get on the ground, he lunged at the officers. And they subsequently shot him, fearing for their safety."
Morales was being transported to a Nevada prison where he faced decades behind bars for sexual assault.
