Coffee Could Cause Babies to Be Born Smaller, Later

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Researchers now believe women who drink coffee during pregnancy may be more likely to have a small baby who is born late.

A Swedish study of 60,000 pregnancies compared a woman's diet to her child's weight at birth and the length of her pregnancy.

They looked at all sources of caffeine, including coffee, soda and chocolate.

They did not find an increased risk for pre-term delivery among women with caffeine in their diet, but there was an association between caffeine and low birth weight.

They also found coffee specifically was associated with longer pregnancies.
