A Waco veteran is caught up in the fight of his life.
He's trying to save his home for his wife and kids, as they face foreclosure, And now he's getting help to make that happen.
It's thanks to a team of pro-bono lawyers who are helping to keep roofs over our veterans' heads.
"This is kind of hard to let go, it's like a family member," former Army Ranger Merlin Pomfrey says as he gazes at the home he's lived in for the past seven years.
To him and his wife Judy, the Waco house is much more than meets the eye.
His wife Judy reminisces with him.
"What about our first Easter here, when it snowed," she says.
"Yeah, when the kids got out here and made all the snowballs," Merlin replies.
But Werline lost his job in 2011 due to downsizing, and they've faced foreclosure since 2012.
"It's an old home, but it's still our home," Judy says fondly.
And if they lose their house, it wouldn't be the first time.
Hurricane Katrina destroyed their first home in 2005.
"It's like the same feelings of leaving New Orleans, because when you're attached to your own home, you don't want to just be uprooted," said Werlin.
"Right now, it's a bit of a roller coaster, because we don't know if they're going to come and knock on the door and tell us that we have to get out," adds Judy.
But Judy and Werlin aren't alone.
A new nonprofit out of Washington, D.C., Is taking on their case for free.
Honor The Soldier is a group of lawyers who help veterans facing foreclosure or eviction fight for their homes.
Founder and President Frank Pate says, "We're going to be there as kind of a the person that's running them on the mission that they have in front of them, meaning saving their house from this process."
So far they've convinced a judge to let a jury hear the Pomfreys' case.
Now a pretrial hearing is set for Friday.
That's when the jury hearing will be set.
It's all so that Werlin can forge onward, without leaving any memories behind.
"You try to go on, because that's what, as an adult, you have to do, but can't put those things into words," he said.
