SAN MARCOS, Texas - The No. 25 Baylor (13-2)
pitching staff threw a pair of complete-game shutouts, leading the Lady
Bears to a 2-0 win over Sam Houston State (5-8) and 3-0 victory against
UT Arlington (5-2) on day two of the Texas
Shootout, Friday afternoon.
Heather Stearns and Courtney Repka combined to
allow just four hits and one walk in 14.0 innings of work. The Baylor
offense stranded 18 runners combined, but managed 16 hits, led by
Kaitlyn Thumann's five.
"We did a good job putting the ball in play, we
just couldn't drive in the runs," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Those
days happen, but our short game and aggressiveness were great and got
our pitchers the runs they needed. Heather and Courtney
were awesome today and I can't say enough about this staff of pitchers."
Game One
Baylor received a complete-game, 12-strikeout
performance from Stearns (3-1) en route to a 2-0 win over Sam Houston
State in game one.
The freshman registered her second complete-game
shutout of the year, going 7.0 innings, allowing two hits, no runs, no
walks with a season high 12 strikeouts.
Thumann went 3-for-3, while Jordan Strickland and Stearns added RBI for BU.
The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second,
executing the short-game to perfection. Stearns led off with a base hit
up the middle, and Bailey Chalmers laid down the sacrifice bunt to put
pinch runner Jill Reid at second with one out.
Strickland then came through and delivered a single to left center for
the RBI and 1-0 advantage.
BU doubled its lead in the third, as the sac bunt
was again on display. Linsey Hays notched a base hit through the left
side and Smith reached via hit by pitch to put runners on first and
second with no outs. Robin Landrith's sacrifice
moved both runners into scoring position for Stearns to get an
RBI-groundout, making it 2-0.
Baylor, which stranded 10 runners in the game, left potential runs on base in each inning.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the first,
Landrith roped a fly ball to deep right field, against the wind, that
reached the warning track, a few feet short of a grand slam.
Game Two
Baylor used the bookend approach scoring runs in
the first and seventh inning to take a 3-0 victory over UT Arlington in
its second game of the day.
Courtney Repka (3-0) picked up her first
complete-game shutout of the year, allowing just two hits, walking one
and striking out one.
Smith paced the offense with her third, three-hit game, going 3-for-4, while Thumann added a pair of hits and two runs.
Thumann led off the game with a single up the
middle and was sacrificed over to second by Kathy Shelton. The sophomore
right fielder swiped third base, seeing the throw get past the third
baseman, and advanced home for an early 1-0 lead.
Following a walk to Villanueva, who was thrown out
trying to steal second, Repka retired 19 of the next 20 batters of the
game, keeping the Mavericks scoreless.
Baylor gave the senior hurler the insurance she
needed, plating two more runs in the seventh. Justine Young delivered a
one-out single to third to get things going, followed by a Thumann
single and stolen base to put runners at second and
third. Shelton stepped in to deliver a pop fly to second that was
caught on the edge of the grass, however, Young took off from third and
slid around the tag for the sac fly RBI and a 2-0 lead. Holly Holl put
the advantage at three with an infield-single of
her own, towards short, scoring Thumann.
Shelton ended her hit streak at nine games and on-base streak at 14.
The Lady Bears will be back in action Saturday, taking on North Texas at 9:30 a.m. That game can be heard live on baylorbears.com.
