Central Texas's 44th Annual Rattlesnake Round-Up

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Only a town like Oglesby can attract more people than it's own population in one day.

The reason? Rattle snakes.

The town's 44th Annual Rattlesnake Round-Up continues to bring folks to Central Texas from all over the state.

Lacey Bullock likes snakes.  "I use to have a boa but I had to get rid of it because my mom got scared of it."

So it's no wonder she was at the 44th Annual Oglesby Rattlesnake Round-Up, an event that attracts thousands of people to the tiny town all because of snakes.

Jackie Bibby and other snake handler performers let fans get close to the rattlesnakes.

Sometimes they might get a little too close and personal themselves.

"Those kids see us doing this and they might think that they can go and do it themselves so we always try to be really really clear that the kids are never ever touch a snake on their own," Bibby said.

And remember rattlesnakes are dangerous so if you ever come across them Jackie says to remember to stay still and don't run away.

"I've lost a leg. I've lost the use of this thumb, part of this thumb . I've got scars that are all the way up to my elbow so yeah they're dangerous."

These snakes are fresh from the wild brought in by snake hunters like Jimmy Aycock hoping to the win a prize for the most pounds and longest and shortest snakes.

Snake hunter Jimmy Aycock said, "Well we kind of had an off year this year, we probably ended up with probably 50-55 pounds of snakes."

But these fans are for the entertainment and it looks like it's working.

The Rattlesnake Round-Up isn't all snakes.  There's food, crafts, and music.

So if you missed it this weekend there's sure to be another one next year.
