California Couple Missing in South America for a Month

Posted: Updated:

A young couple from California have been missing for over a month now while on a biking trip through South America.

Jamie Neal, 27, and Garrett Hand, 25, left for a multi-month cycling trip in November and had been posting their vacation online.

The couple was last seen on January 26, getting onto a bus in Lima.

Hand's mother told NBC she is very worried because all activity has stopped on her son's bank account.

"We are trying to figure out how he would be on buses, staying in hostels, being on boats, without any money," she said.

Multiple media outlets have reported that the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Lima are helping search for the couple.

On February 13th, the U.S. Embassy in Lima warned tourists of a potential kidnapping threat by an unnamed criminal organization in the Cusco area.

The embassy reported the threat was creditable until the end of the month.
