(KCEN) -- A Copperas Cove apartment building is completely destroyed after catching fire yesterday afternoon.
The Copperas Cove Fire Department got the call about an apartment complex on fire at 2:16 p.m.
The apartment was unoccupied and had been vacant for several years. But a neighbor, Alberto Tijerina, said he actually saw people constantly going in and out of the abandoned building.
Tijerina said, "I thought years ago that these would burn down sooner or later. It's winter, so somebody putting a candle for warmth or light or whatever and it would go up in smoke."
There was no electricity or gas running through the building so that eliminates several ways the fire could have started.
Although the Copperas Cove Fire Department has not verified how the fire started, they say the 30 to 40 mile-per-hour winds yesterday fed the fire, allowing it to grow making it a challenge for fire fighters.
Neighbors living in the apartment complex next to the vacant building were evacuated but no injuries were reported.
