Cameron Park Zoo Apes Skype With Other Endangered Species

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- It was a very eventful evening for two orangutans at the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco yesterday.

The apes KJ and Mei were allowed to Skype with other endangered a pieces around the world.

It's all thanks to a national organization geared toward innovation.

The zoo was asked to participate in the International Technology Entertainment and Design Conference known as Ted.

Elephants from Thailand and dolphins from Baltimore were also included in the unique conference geared towards enriching the lives of animals, especially endangered species.

It's all about stimulating their minds.

Using it allows the animals to learn sounds and communicate with trainers.

But Skyping with other animals was a whole new experience the orangutans seem to love.

The zoo says they hope participating in Skype lectures like tonight will help bring awareness to this endangers species.

Curator of Cameron Park Zoo Programs & Exhibits Terri Cox said, "I really think that it was interesting to watch KJ and Mei's reaction to watch the computer screen quite a bit and were definitely very interested, not just in the humans but also with the other animals that were on the screen."

The zoo is involved in a species survival plan, which helps raise money and spread awareness for each endangered animal.

Events are held throughout the year that all go to benefit animals just like these orangutans.
