Midway ISD Plans For 34.5 Million Dollar Bond

Posted: Updated:

Thirty-four point five million dollars could bring major changes to Midway ISD.

The board plans to have a bond election in May, and if voters approve it could bring some relief to many Hewitt families.

This bond will take some of the stress off families financially, and also give the school some new amenities.

Along with the district providing music instruments and sports equipment.

They'll also be able to provide each student with a tablet, like an iPad, and add buy more school busses.

For parents like Dawn and Matt Hall, their child's education is top priority.

"The school here is the reason why we moved here," said Dawn Hall.

Ten years ago they decided a change was needed that would help their daughter grow mentally.

"We were in Marlin which, the schools there they just couldn't measure up to Waco and Hewitt," said Dawn Hall.

The bond would fund more security, table tablets for every student, a fine arts addition, and a multi purpose indoor practice facility, among others.

"We have put in a lot of time and research into looking at the needs of our school district," said Midway ISD Superintendent George Kazanas

"Yes I do support that because all of the kids you know they're not from families that can afford these type of things, the tablets, and the tablets can be used to help them with their homework," said Evelyn Graham.

But one thing many people wonder is, who's going to pay for it?

"Sure it'd be a benefit, but its going to be expensive it sounds like," said Matt Hall.

The district says there will be no hike for taxpayers.

That's because property values and revenue have increased so they can leave the tax rate at 28 cents as it is now.

"We want to manage that tax rate, we want to be good stewards with it and keep it as constant as we can in order to meet the future needs of our kids," said Kazanas.

And as long as her daughter's education is expanding, the bond has this mom's vote.

"I'm for it, if its going to benefit definitely," said Dawn Hall.

Early voting is April 29th through May seventh.

A schedule of polling locations will be posted on www.midwayisd.org.
