Students Mourn The Loss Of Baylor Freshman

Posted: Updated:

Many Baylor students are still in shock following a freak accident that took the life of a freshman.

Eighteen-year-old Kevin Signo was practicing a traditional Filipino dance when he tried to do a backflip and landed on his head.

Friends and fellow students like Hunter Kerr are handling the devastating situation.

For students like Kerr the shock of losing a dorm mate is still unbelievable.

"I came back from the basket ball game and we saw an ambulance and a fire truck and we just thought it was like you know something minor," said dorm mate Hunter Kerr.

Saturday, 18-year-old Kevin Signo, was at a Filipino Student Association meeting practicing a traditional dance.

He tried to do a backflip, which he had accomplished many times, but this time the outcome wasn't so good.

Kevin landed on his head and was taken to Hillcrest Medical Center where he was pronounced dead the next day.

Kevin's dorm mates at Martin Hall said although he kept to himself the majority of the time, overall he was a genuinely nice guy.

"Kind of a big loss for a lot of the community here and I know a lot of the people here are still sort of shocked," said Martin Hall Community Leader Nate Rogers.

And their thoughts and prayers go to his family.

Kevin's parents said he was an organ donor who was firm on donating his eyes, skin, bones and organs.

"He knew that he would be helping others if something tragic had happened. We're very happy to have had him for a short time," said Kevin's dad Henry Signo.

"He had many friends and classmates who will miss him so much, the university is providing as many services as we possibly can to students to help them work though their grief," said Baylor Spokeswoman Lori Fogleman.

Students like Hunter, who now more than ever realize how quickly a life can be taken away.

"It's something so simple ended his life out of nowhere you know it's just like you really have to be grateful for what you have," said Kerr.

Many Baylor students are expected to make a trip to Allen for the funeral.

Kevin's funeral service will be Saturday at 10 in the morning at the Turrentine, Jackson and Morrow Funeral Home in Allen.
